Kent College Canterbury

The main aims of the Physical Education Department are:

To provide a varied programme of activities which promotes a positive attitude to a healthy life style, whilst maintaining access for all.

To engender enough interest and enthusiasm that the pupils wish to continue to develop their interests after they leave the school.

Through an extensive array of extra-curricular activities to promote the general ethos of the school and contribute to the moral and social education of the pupils. Recently the school has embarked a number of pre-season tournaments and tours which are seen as an important part of player development.

To promote excellence at every level but still provide success and achievement at all levels.

To promote links between the school and local sports clubs.

In years 7, 8 and 11 pupils are allocated 5 periods of PE of which 3 are dedicated to games. In years 9 and 10 pupils have 4 periods, 2 of which are games. In the sixth form pupils have one games afternoon in which many options can be chosen from the major games to golf, fitness training or swimming.

In years 10 and 11 GCSE Physical Education (Edexcel) is available and in the sixth form AS/A2 PE (OCR) is offered. Both areas are taught by experienced members of the department.

The core curriculum is supported by a very full programme of extra-curricular activities and inter-school fixtures.

The facilities used are excellent and include a fully equipped Sports Hall - dance studio, squash courts and teaching room. On site facilities include a rugby pitch; floodlit Astroturf, cricket square and nets; 4 grass and 16 hard tennis courts; and 3 netball courts. On campus facilities include grass athletics track and jumps area, football pitch; a cricket square and 3 rugby fields.

We also use excellent facilities around the city such as Boughton Golf Club and have good links with sports clubs such as Canterbury Hockey Club.

At the school, sport plays an important role and many pupils represent the school. Kent College has a strong tradition of team sports brought about by a combination of experienced coaches and a strong fixture list. For boys rugby, hockey, cricket and tennis are the major team games and for girls hockey, netball and tennis. The school teams perform very well in most County tournaments. Talented pupils are encouraged to pursue their sport to County, Divisional and National level and the school has a number of representatives across a variety of sports.

The school has a strong hockey tradition and both boys' and girls' teams have been successful at national level in recent years . Currently at the school we have three England international players. Many of our senior players play for senior teams at Canterbury Hockey Club.

Lizzie Neal has recently been awarded the Higgins Trophy as the outstanding under 16 hockey player in the country.
